Can an Old Man Learn Affiliate Marketing?

So my father has been a dentist and has owned a practice for his entire life pretty much. He’s getting tired of the declining economy in our area and patients that stall out on payments and don’t have insurance. He’s selling his practice and then possibly going to work for a larger dentist. He wants to take a few months off in between and learn affiliate marketing, which he then hopes will support him through his golden years. If that fails out, he goes back to work. So of course I’ll be the one personally tutoring him, but do you think it can be done? I think so. He’s very intelligent and I get my smarts from him. Here’s what I told him before this all goes down :

a) Have $10,000-20,000 on hand and get an Amex ready for testing.

b) Understand that it’s not as easy as you think it is.

c) I’ll help him pick out his first offer, and get him set up with some good AMs at networks.

d) Look into the DentalPlans.com offer lol.

I’ll let you guys know his progress in this blog as time goes on. This could be especially interesting to you older folks out there who are perhaps just getting started in the game. Anybody can do this at any age, it just takes some brains, hard work, determination, and money.

    Two questions…

    1) Why $10K-20K on hand? WOW that’s a Load?

    2) Why AMEX, plenty of other good CC’s out there?

    Just wondering.

  2. December 13, 2007

“get him set up with some good AMs at networks.”

How do you go about doing that?

If you’re making 100k+ a month, why not just take care of your old man ;)

the trouble with this is usually its the pops teachin the kid throughout life

if your dad is anything like mine he’ll break a beer bottle across your head and tell YOU how its done…sonny boy..

  6. December 13, 2007

LOL, dude… if I had you holding my hand I’m sure my financial issues would evaporate within a couple of months. I suspect he’s going to get just a little bit more help (rightly so) than you give out here. :-)

    1) Because that’s what I’m going to have him initially invest.

    2) I’m actually writing a credit card article I’m going to be posting soon.

  8. December 13, 2007

Through connections/AMs I have that I know will hook him up.

  9. December 13, 2007

Yep he’s my father after all. He’ll be getting A LOT of help and guidance through everything. I’ll teach him most of what I know, he’s not going to steal my offers or anything so it’s no harm done.

  10. December 13, 2007

Sounds interesting..Could turn out to be quite a duo, sounds like he’s already financially ahead of a lot more people than when they start out so at least the stress will be lower (hopefully), then he does got the UberAffiliate behind his back. It’s all gravy.

  11. December 13, 2007

Nice! my family stil thinks its all a scam…

  12. December 13, 2007

My friend who used to be an AM at a big network in the UK told me that the company’s biggest affiliate was this old chinese lady who barely spoke english and knew barely anything about computers, but hired a couple other people to write the landing pages and help put together keyword lists and stuff. She was pullin in like 300k a month apparently. I figure if she can do it with no technical experience than anyone can. Seriously.

  13. December 14, 2007

I’d be very interested in knowing what happens… I’m sure with you as a mentor he’ll do great no sweat.

  14. December 14, 2007

First time here, I was searching for “getting started in affiliate marketing, ” since I just have, and watched my first ppcs drain away, with a near %90 bounce rate at a page that sold tons of the brand keyword people searched for.

I’m 51 and, like your dad, not in need of immediate cash – so your post really rang a bell with me. Unfortunately, my kids are not internet marketers (maybe when they start primary school).

So, I am curious to see how he goes. I will tough it out because, despite my humbling original results, I am convinced it’s do-able.

I assume the 10-20k is for adwords (may a pox be upon them).

  15. December 14, 2007

I’ll be interested to hear the results. I hope anybody can learn. Because I’m certainly trying the hard way! Brute force baby! Good lucky Paul!

P.S. I just had my first affiliate success check out my most recent post: “How I Accidently Made $88.50 with First Try On Online Affiliate Marketing”

  16. December 14, 2007

haha.. this has got to be a blogging first.. first persoon to teach his dad how to make money online and blog about it.

I bet he could make a bucket load just blogging about dentistry. He should start his own dental review site :0

  17. December 14, 2007

half the readers here still think it’s a scam ;p

  18. December 14, 2007

way to go man. your blog should be newbie2millionaire :)

  19. December 14, 2007

Congrats Tevin! Hopefully it’s just a sign of what’s to come. Our first sale was very similar. Completely unexpected.

  20. December 14, 2007

Look forward to seeing it – wish I was a middle-aged dentist, too. :)

I can see why people would think it’s a scam, what with all the get-rich-quick products out there and “dangerously unqualified” participants.

However, there is no formal training for this yet besides doing it on the job for a company that does this all the time, like clickstocustomers, pepperjam, wherever the heck diorex works, etc. Add that this industry is maybe 10 years old which is nothing in comparison to everything else out there.

If anyone views me with skepticism or disdain (and you actually care :) ) I just tell them I do freelance marketing. Well, most of my business is consulting so I tell them that first, but just giving some ideas out there to the others…

  21. December 14, 2007

I can’t wait to see how this turns out I’m sure your dad won’t have any problems picking it up with you showing him the ropes. I always like hearing stories like these where instead of the parents always bailing the kid out the kid actually gets to help his parents out for once.

  22. December 14, 2007

Should be interesting to see how successful he will be, especially with you behind him all the way. Keep us posted!

    Rich

  23. December 14, 2007

This could be good for blogging and helping beginners. I wish him luck. I will have to sign up to be next on the course, or shadow ;).

  24. December 14, 2007

Nice idea! Good luck with your dad, I’ll surely check back in to see some results ;)

This was an awesome post, because not only is my Dad too a dentist who has owned his practice for quite a long time now, but he’s getting sick and tired of his job too. Difference is that we live in the UK (where the NHS are trying to screw everyone over instead), and that my Dad is a total computer n00b – so it would be even harder trying to teach him.

I figured if I could get to the point where I’m making $20k a month, that would be something nice to give him so he could start trying to increase that with some help along the way. I’ve shot you an email mate ;)

  26. December 14, 2007

    Paul,

What’s the chances of your dad making a guest post here say once a week and detailing his progress? Looks, like you got a ton of people here that want to watch him progress so could be great for you, him, the blog and all of us reader junkies.

  27. December 14, 2007

wow awesome dude…very cool to see ya folks making money while u teach em.

  28. December 14, 2007

I hope so! I about fell out of my chair when I made money. LOL!

    – Tevin

  29. December 14, 2007

Oh yeah I definitely think this can be done. It’s going to be cool to see his progress and how things go down. Definitely keep us updated on his progress. It takes a lot of hard work but it can be done. Good luck.

  30. December 14, 2007

How do I sign up to be next? LOL. Hell, you should make a contest. And whoever wins it, gets your personally help and tutoring. That would be sweet; would probably also draw a lot of people to your blog.

  31. December 14, 2007

    $10k-20k? Ouch!

I started with $500 and I’m way over my initial goals.

  32. December 14, 2007

Good luck to your Dad with his alternative to a pension plan.

  33. December 14, 2007

Good luck to your dad!, never is too late to learn something new, and with such a mentor, he will be successful, no doubt of it. I’m starting this adventure too, so there’s so much to learn :)

  34. December 14, 2007

I actually coach people in their 60’s 70’s and 80’s if you have the patience you definitely can do it. I do find it harder to get across my thoughts at times so I created a step by step plan that works great over the phone, in your case you should have no problems.

  35. December 14, 2007

If your dentist dad doesn’t have $20k to put into a new ‘venture’ after years of dentistry, perhaps he should just stick to bricks and mortar

  36. December 14, 2007

I hope you took my post in the spirit it was intended. I think it’s great you’re teaching your dad how to do this.

    I’m just jealous. ;-)

    Best of luck to him.

    Vic

  37. December 15, 2007

    That’s awesome! :)

My Dad taught me a lot of the stuff I know about affiliate marketing. He’s what I consider a super affiliate that doesn’t know it yet.

If the advice to your own Dad is it takes 10k-20k to start, then yes, almost all of the programs out there are scams. This is the first post or person I have ever heard say it takes that kind of initial capital outlay. If this is true, and I will assume it is, then yes, most programs are scams aimed at suckers who will 1.) Never take action and 2.) Don’t have the resources required even if they do.

  39. December 16, 2007

hmmm, it’ll be interesting to follow the progress of this. :)
    ~ Dave

  40. December 16, 2007

Looking forward to that article – everyone seems to say use AMEX though.
    ~ Dave

  41. December 16, 2007

Wouldn’t it be funny if he did still your offers though. What a great scandal that would be.
    ~ Dave

  42. December 16, 2007

Sounds like a rumor that just too out of hand…funny i it was true though.
    ~ Dave

  43. December 25, 2007

I don’t think you need 10 grand to learn affiliate marketing. Seriously, did you invest that much when you started?

  44. Wow 10 grand for starting. That’s a nice amount of money, without a coach like you he would lose a lot of money…

  45. December 31, 2007

Can you provide a 1 month update ?

    :)
