If You Want To Be A Super Affiliate…Act Like One

We all want to be as uber as possible and make the most money possible, so you should act like it. In order to be truly uber, you cannot care about money. I’m sorry but you just can’t always be worried that “oh I’m tight on money I don’t think I should do this.” This mostly relates to offline purchases, and is something I’ve learned through experience.

Here’s an example, say you’re working on a crappy desktop with a 12 inch screen. Every day you probably think “man it’d be really nice if I just went all out and got dual 30″ monitors and a MacPro, work would be so much easier.” So do it! You can be thinking “oh I’d do that, but I don’t really have the money”…getting the new computer will make you work 10x as fast because of the speed, and 10x efficient because of the screen space. You’ll make your money back in no-time due to the increased productivity. Technical productivity aside, you’re going to feel awesome when you go all out and buy a sick computer. You’re going to be psyched up and want to work on it. Say hello to more productivity and more profit.

If it’s going to help your business or mentality…DO IT. Get the $1,000 office chair if it’s going to make you 5x as comfortable throughout the day, working in a crappy chair is going to make you uncomfortable and less productive. Get the Blackberry or iPhone if it means you’ll be able to read and respond to all your emails while you’re sitting at the doctors office for an hour, so once you get home that’s all out the way and you can just get to work. Get the top notch fax machine if it means you’re not going to have to sit and spend 20 minutes every other day trying to send a fax on a cheap crappy machine. Get the top notch grill if it means you’ll be able to cook your chicken twice as fast. The list can go on and on…people are too worried about losing all their money if they buy things that are the best; so worried that they don’t think at all about the fact that down the road this is going to make them more money.

Personal examples? One is with my computers. For the first YEAR of work, I worked on my eBay used 12″ iBook G4. It was slow…the screen was microscopic…and a lot of software didn’t work right with it. Looking back this is one of my dumbest early mistakes. If I had taken my first $5,000 profit and bought the computer I have now, I’d probably have an extra $20,000 sitting in my bank account. I finally just went all out and got the upgraded MacPro with 30″ cinema display. I now don’t have to click back and forth to get IMs, I can edit huge Photoshop images without having to scroll all over, and I can have multiple browser windows up so I don’t have to log in and out of different gmail/affiliate accounts. I’m literally 10x as productive with this computer as I was with my iBook.

Another personal example…my phones. I had an iPhone, and I loved the internet/email on the go. Problem was, it didn’t get service in the basement where my current office is. So every time I got a business call (which was every day), I’d have to run upstairs to talk. I was constantly running up and down, up and down alllll day long. What a complete waste of time that was for me, I could have been taking my calls at the computer while I was on the computer so I didn’t have to say “Hold on for a sec I have to run to my computer and check.” But I still loved checking my email and blog etc when I was out. So I bought another phone from Verizon, where I get fine service in the basement. The extra $80 a month is well worth not having to constantly be running all around my house, so I just use both phones. iPhone when I’m out and need to check email, and Voyager for talking on.

Moral of my story here? If you really want to be an uber affiliate, you can’t be cheap…because uber affiliates aren’t cheap. Buy the best because it’s going to save you from time and hassle down the road, and ultimately make you more productive, and happy. I mean this just goes with anything in life. Let’s say you’re a construction worker. Tool Set A will cost you $500 but the tools are cheap, don’t work that well, and break easy. Tool Set B will cost you $15,000 but the tools are top of the line, faster, and don’t break. With Tool Set B, you’re going to be able to build houses twice as fast. Twice as many houses will pay for itself x100 in a few months. In reality it’s not going to be that big of a difference, but it definitely will help productivity. So it looks like it’s a lot smarter to get the ridiculously expensive tool set because after you build a few houses you’ll already have paid for the tools plus much more.

For us affiliate marketers…go with Tool Set B.

Cell phone signal extender. Would probably fix your basement problem.

“If I had taken my first $5,000 profit and bought the computer I have now” … and that’s the real key … reinvest your PROFITS in better productivity. Going big before you’ve even made a dime usually means going home for most companies/entrepreneurs.

Absolutely, work with the best resources available.

I need to show my wife this post so she doesn’t freak out when I get my new MacBook Pro + 30 inch CineDisplay :) I upgrade my equipment every year, and she thinks it’s excessive… and maybe it is… but I get a nice psychological boost knowing I’m running on the best setup. Plus it’s a nice write off.

    Exactly my sentiments Paul.

I bought a Dell Ultrasharp 24″ just for web development and affiliate marketing. Works wonders. I’m about to spring for a MacbookPro cause I couldn’t deal with my Dell’s 12.1″ screen.

Why the Dell over some cheap off-brand 24″? The picture quality from the 8-bit PVA panel is amazing(helps in Photoshop), I can put the screen in any orientation imaginable. Sure I could have gotten two 24″ for the price of one Dell, but frankly if I did, I would be replacing those down the road with what I already have. I can’t imagine Apple ACDs yet… they are truly works of art with the S-IPS panels.

MacbookPro – Build quality, build quality, build quality. A joy to work on compared to anything offered from Dell/HP/etc.

In car terms, I rather pay a premium for a Lamborghini Gallardo over a Corvette Z06, even when they serve the same purpose. Why? Cause the side mirrors fold up when parked! =)

I view these toys as investments – if you think you’re saving money by waiting or going with something cheaper with less features, you’re wrong.

Time = Money ? Increased productivity = less time = More money in same amount of time.

Wow. sounds kind of foolish at first, but after you think about it, its almost genius! Amazing :) Great post!

  8. March 14, 2008

I explain this to a lot of people who call me foolish….. now i need to point people to this post .. bookmarked. Thanks.

I get your point, but people should keep in mind that not every purchase is going to result in 10x or 100x as much productivity. Sometimes productivity goes up only a tiny amount, though the purchase might still be worth it. As long as people are not consuming new products just for the sake of it, and adding more electronic waste to the landfill sites (:)

As a personal finance blogger you would think I would disagree with this post, but actually I don’t. Even in personal finance you have to weigh the cost of productivity and versus, the time value of money. If it cost more but allows you to double productivity than it’s a good financial decision.

I’ve always said, if money is the only thing keeping you from doing something, than it is probably worth doing. This goes beyond just productivity and into every aspect of life.

Affiliate Summit is another example. I really don’t have the money to go this summer, but I also don’t have the money to NOT go. So I sucked it up during ASW and bought my ticket, booked the hotel and got the plane tickets. Now I’m going, and instead of wondering if I SHOULD go, I’m just working harder so pay for it :)

  16. March 14, 2008

Even before you buy anything, just knowing you CAN buy it gives you a moral boost. When you do get it you’re already feeling good about the purchase and thinking how you can increase your productivity.

    Nice post Paul!

I’d say only spend the money if you’re positive that it will help in the least bit somewhat. Use common sense with it because if you are tight on budget, and have to choose between a brand spanking new 30in monitor and the rent for your house or apt, then you better hope that you still have a place to live next month.

  18. March 14, 2008

    Speaking like a champion!

Don’t have to money to NOT go, awesome man.

i think the part about the chicken got me… you sound like another uber affiliate i know hmmmmmm….. lol

  20. March 14, 2008

I really agree with you here. Better things surely produce better productivity. Also, when you are feeling happy and feeling good, you are surely going to produce more results.

I drool every time I surf the Mac Store, and I agree that these are the best tools if you want to be more productive, but man they cost so much. I’ll talk myself into it eventually.

  22. March 14, 2008

Thanks for helping me justify my recent shopping spree ;)

  23. March 14, 2008

Excellent post – I’d never thought about things from that perspective before.

  24. March 14, 2008

I totally agree. Just over a month ago, I upgraded my desk, bought 2-22″ displays, a 512mb video card, and added 2gb of ram. It was a lot to shell out but it is now so much better and faster then before.

Next upgrade will be a better notebook. probably a nice macbook set to dual boot.

  25. March 14, 2008

WOW good tips buddy. Yea im working with some sadass irritating computer that im going to change soonest!

  26. March 14, 2008

    Great point. :)

  27. March 14, 2008

I think what we all really need is a toilet seat comfy enough to work from.

  28. March 14, 2008

I grabbed a 22″ Viewsonic VX2245WM with built in Ipod dock. This has helped a ton, and totally justified the $400 price tag. I actually have two. Bigger screen, bright colors….I just love looking at it. Plus the built-in Ipod dock allows me to play my Ipod Touch through my pc stereo without opening iTunes. All this make me want to work at the pc 4-5 hours per day, rather than dreading it, like I used to. So yeah, spend the little extra you need consider it a business investment, and dont think about it again. Or make a game out of it. Say if you want a new “50 HDTV”, instead of just spending the $2000, make a goal of getting a campaign that generates $2000 profit, making the TV the first thing you buy. The smaller goals ultimately lead to big results.

This excellent advice IF….IF you are making profits. Anyone buying a $1,000 chair before making profits is hustling backwards. Profits first, then the $3K computer…

  30. March 15, 2008

    Ray,

I do see why you say you don’t agree with what he stated and I think a lot of people would say that, but then again you have a lot of people that would say they agreed even if they didn’t just to try to “fit in”, but mainly I think what he basically trying to say is that you have to dive in and give it a chance.

Quite honestly thats a big problem with people is that they don’t take them chances to succeed and being in business that’s what its all about is taking it to the next level and taking chances, so in other words the entrepreneur life style and I think that’s what hes referring too.

  31. March 15, 2008

I agree – a great bunch of tips – not just for affiliate marketing, but for life in general as well. However, I really, really do not get calling great things “sick” (you’re going to feel awesome when you go all out and buy a sick computer)?

  32. March 15, 2008

    Great advice!

Just use your money wisely really :p

I would like to add, I would go with the best tools as well! Being a female mechanic, no doubt I buy the best… eff the tools that freakin break and bust my knuckles!

  38. March 24, 2008

True to that. If you want to be a millionair, you need to act like one. You also need to love money. Buy something from the start that will make you feel like one, then get to work on it. Don’t break the bank from the start though (like dropping 10 grands on a home office setup, only to have 0$ left to invest in PPC and other things.) I mean yes, on the Internet, you can start with 0$, and get to 1million$ without investing a penny from your pocket, but don’t make things hard on yourself if you don’t have to.
