Sponsoring a Child

It’s really weird, because as I had just done this and was planning on blogging about it, I saw the most recent John Chow post…just kind of ironic.

As I’m starting to bank some money finally (instead of just reinvesting almost everything), I started thinking about how I could do something good with my money. Because here’s the fact of the matter, if you’re in the online business, there’s a 95% chance you’re either :

a) working full-time online making (most likely) a decent living, you have some money – enough to quit your day job.

b) working online as a side business to your full time job…this job brings in some extra income.

So what I decided to do was sponsor a child. It costs only about $1/day ($32/month)…I mean comeon can we all afford to give $1 of the hundreds we make every day? It pays for their schooling, medical, and other activities. One dollar a day may not seem like much to us, but it can mean A LOT in other parts of the world.

My kid’s name is Julio (3 years old), and I’m not gonna lie this kid is a little PIMP :

He lives in Peru and has asthma – he has no father.

I was either going to go with Julio, or another boy named Maher. He’s a true gentleman, and it’d be awesome if someone here wanted to sponsor him. Click here to read about him. You typically are expected to sponsor the child up until they’re 18 which is a while but it makes the whole experience more worthwhile IMO. Just the fact that you’re having a huge impact on someone’s entire early life is awesome. You get to write letters to your child and have them write back to you.

I’m not doing a plug or anything for Compassion, it’s just a thing I think we should all be doing. $1/day from our income isn’t much to ask, and the satisfaction (that at least I get) is worth well more than that. I’ll probably end up taking on some more kids soon.

Ok, back to affiliate marketing posts tomorrow :-).

My wife and I have been sponsoring a little girl for years now. From the letters she was excited to see our new little one that we had this year. I can’t wait to read her letter after the one we sent with a picture of our little girl.

Likewise – Umotoni is the little girl we’ve been sponsoring over in Rwanda. Just reading her letters as she grows up are a tremendous blessing. I think you’re 100% on-target. We’ve all been hooked up with some smarts and opportunities to be able to do this on the web and it would be a shame if I just heaped up those blessings on myself.

I’m glad you posted about this. Compassion Intl. does an excellent job with financial responsibility and have a long and successful track record cutting through the red tape in some of those nations. Very important to consider.

Well done! Not many people who have just started out is willing to give their income away.

Congratulations on your new son :P

Sponsoring a child is a great feeling isn’t it?

Yeah, I actually didn’t even think it would feel as awesome as it does.

This is a great post. :)

I concur with you about giving back.

I actually sponsor a child in Africa named Mwineivan. I also am paying for a pastor to go through Bible college over there.

    It’s very rewarding!

    Keep up the good work!
