Google Adwords Strategy

I haven’t really written an article on how I’ve been dealing with Google lately, and PPC ad networks in general. My progression of where I advertise has been pretty simple :

Four Months Ago –
70% Facebook / 30% Google
Two Months Ago – 40% Facebook / 60% Google
Two Weeks Ago – 0% Facebook / 100% Google

Now looking back already, the biggest mistake was relying 100% on Google…and I’m feeling it via slappage.

Now my experiences with Google in these past four months? They’ve slapped more and more, and faster and faster. How have my strategies changed?

Early Strategy : 3 Accounts, Lots of Campaigns in Each, Use Redirect Trick

I had 3 accounts that I’d make 5 campaigns in and use the redirect trick (make your ad so the display URL and destination URL is Geico.com, they scrape Geico to determine your QS, then set the individual keyword destination URL to your landing page. this gets any site through and gives it a good quality score).

It took Google maybe a week before they’d catch on and slap everything. Matt would then just make 5 more campaigns in each account and repeat and wait a week.

Eventually they stopped sending a lot of initial traffic to the campaigns and slapped them right away.

Mid-Way Strategy : Mass Accounts, 1 Campaign Per Account, No Redirect Trick

The redirect trick was getting snuffed out right away so we ditched that and went onto mass account building. Matt made 20 accounts in a day and added campaigns to all of them. We linked right to the site as well. I think because we didn’t use the redirect trick, none of the campaigns got any traffic. I think five of the accounts spent $100 or so, and the rest didn’t do anything.

We ditched that and are moving back to…

Late Strategy : Single Account Rotation with Mass Campaigns, Redirect Back

Now we’re going to use 1 account. Make 10 or so campaigns in that with the redirect trick and see if they all get traffic. Once it gets a burst and gets slapped, we rotate the account out and use a new account and make 10 campaigns in that. Rinse and repeat.

This clearly isn’t the textbook way to use Google and it’s not anything that’s going to generate a long-term profit, but we’re making money on it now and that’s what matters to me. As long as I can keep finding ways to make a lot of money fast, 1-2 good years is all I need.

Anywho, just wanted to openly share exactly how I’m promoting things right now.

I’m planning on getting back into Facebook, MAYBE Myspace, and definitely media buys.

Happy April Fools Day ya’ll.

I tried internet marketing for 3 years and failed at it. Now I am doing trading (in high risk and volatile derivatives) and reached 6 figures of profit ($100,000+) only in the first 3 months. I am having more money and success than I ever had in my life and for the first time I feel like a winner.

People only use the bad economy as an excuse for not being successful and thriving. The media is just hyping this mild recession for all it’s worth and most people are buying into the mindset of doom and gloom.

You said you need 1 or 2 good years of income before you quit. How much do you want to earn before you retire from internet marketing?

It’s like you’re stealing my ideas.

I have guys in india making about 10-15 accounts a day with as many campaigns they can make after they have created each and direct linking them all. Make $100 – $1,000 here or there and keep it going. Pretty easy since I”m paying them about $2/hr.

Run the same method on yahoo ppc :) but just more time consuming

So, if I understand correctly, the redirect trick is to point your disp/dest URL to an authority site in your niche? You mentioned Gieco.com … I assume that’s b/c your offer was in the same niche as Gieco.com?

  14. April 2, 2009

A lot of this going around, good too see bloggers have a sense of humor.

Hehe, very strange post on first sight.. but the effect is clear enough :)… nice one…

This is awesome information. The big G’s algorithms constantly change and likewise, we must also change dynamically with it.

    Hey Paul,
Could you enlighten me on setting up multiple accounts with the G? I’d like to add that the method of faking your LP for QS does work, but I have problems getting it to work consistently… perhaps because of the account. None the less, I would like to figure out this multiple account thing you are doing.
    Thanks,
    Jason

Thanks for ‘1-2 good years is all I need.’

I have some unique techniques to do with Google, but I didn’t applied them because I wanted long term shit.

Time to go and play with Google for fast money!

  19. April 3, 2009

Looks like a good plan. Now I need to stop being chicken and actually start into PPC type advertising.

I haven’t had too much luck with facebook advertising. I had a free $250 credit to advertise with facebook, but the bounce rate was so high from traffic from those ads. I have had good luck with adwords though, even though it is expensive.

Just out of curiosity – does Google not ban you for having multiple accounts like Facebook? If it does, how do you get around it in your case? Do you find that they blacklist the domains as well? Do you have to register 10 new domains for each of the 10 campaigns? That might be why your campaigns are getting slapped so fast at times.

Also, how long does each campaign typically run using your last approach before it gets canned? Are the 10 campaigns in your case across several niches or variations of one?

Sorry for the flood of questions man. Shit kinda went downhill for me, so I’m just trying to pick up new things.

    Hey fuck this affiliate marketing!!

Im more intrested in the ‘trading (in high risk and volatile derivatives’ that tyler commented in the 3rd one down.
i do ok online but hey tyler share the knowledge dude!!! day trading? forex?

how much do you pay Matt?

  27. April 6, 2009

You shouldn’t just depend on one source like you did. You should always have something just in case Google went wrong.

Typically shady advertising good job hope you feel good scamming people

  29. April 6, 2009

How do you setup so many Google accounts without Google realizing what is going on?

  30. April 7, 2009

It’s pretty hard to trick google in the long term. Sure you can tweak stuff here and there and get couple days of increased traffic/revenue but unless you are extremely sneaky it won’t last longer than a week or two.

  31. April 7, 2009

Wow… this was a spoof April Fool’s post… and none of this stuff was for real. Why are so many people believing that is what he actually does for marketing.

If you try that stuff in the post… you more than likely will get banned by Google. ‘Nuff said.

  32. April 7, 2009

Fcebook PPC is pure shit and useless n Adwords is oversaturated no matter what you do! but thnx anyway for the nice lesson

  38. Gry dla Dzieci is right, you can only fool google for so long, before it all comes crashing around your ears….

    April 11, 2009

Any response to this?? Do you use a new domain for each campaign?

How do you create so many accounts without getting banned?

  40. April 15, 2009

Just go and create. I have hald a dozen of Adwords accounts, used promotion codes on all of them, so got some hundred dollars free adverticing money. There is a limit on Adsense accounts, but not on Adwords, as far as it does not go to mass creation. Or maybe I’ve been just lucky.

  41. August 5, 2009

I must say that its interesting article. I always thought that Google is a place to focus on. The whole idea of making site appear higher and higher on search results is not maybe a total mystery to me, but still some blank sheet. I heard that Twitting is great way of making benefits from web blogging, also some good opinions about Facebook. But never thought that using Facebook could give so much.

  42. December 9, 2009

I’ts great and big lesson for me! Thnx for sharing

  43. December 9, 2009

    I totally agree! :)

  44. March 9, 2010

Any update yet? I would love to hear an update too.

  45. April 3, 2010

Great article but always remember that a lot depends on the campaign parameters

  46. April 8, 2010

    Crazy!

They don’t teach you this stuff every day, great info to learn but not sure if I’d directly use it hehe

  47. June 26, 2010

As you can see, Google AdWords keywords involve a lot more thinking and planning than simply going live with a site and a campaign.

  48. June 26, 2010

When it comes to having more success with Google AdWords you are going to want to make sure you focus on getting your visitors.

  49. June 26, 2010

Beware of stories of people who say they have made quick riches by using an AdWords campaign – if their claim is true, be sure they did their research to find the proper Google AdWords keywords in the process.
