Rebills Are “Dead”…Now What?

Over the past few months the industry has seemed to gone through some slight changes. Rebill offers for the most part are not run like they were before. I know this because of what’s happened to my own traffic, getting approval on my own offer, and then friends that I’ve talked to who have had to go back to “legit” affiliate offers.

So now what? Some food for thought…

Oldies but Goodies

Offers like credit reports, auto insurance, dating, etc. These are the classics but they’re offers that have been running strong this entire time for a reason…they convert. Some of the very first offers I ran back in the day were all 3 of those I listed above, and all 3 were profitable. I also see Google ads as well as Facebook ads for all 3 of those, which tells me that it looks like they’re converting just like the old days.

Mobile/IQ

Mobile used to be the hot “shady” thing to do, when rebilling people for $9.99 was unethical. My oh my if we only knew we would rebill for 10x that amount and go to bed with a smile on our faces (‘our’ just referring to the entire industry). Mobile offers are doing well from what I hear. I see some ads on Myspace and other teenage oriented sites, and I also hear incenting these offers on app traffic is working nicely.

Edu

If you take a closer peek at Facebook and a few other places, you’ll see a few people running education offers. These have been kind of a “sleeper” for a while now, I ran them a while ago with some success. The only thing you have to watch out for is quality, they can end up nailing you on it. But other than that it’s a nice leadgen with a good payout for just completing a form with no credit card.

Good Ole Fashioned Business

Maybe it’s time for you to take some of those rebill profits and pour them into a business idea you’ve had in your mind for the past year. Don’t forget that affiliate marketing is just one of the ways to make money online. Build a site that people want to visit every day or a service that they don’t mind paying to use. In the age of Facebook/Digg/Reddit/etc, sharing has never been easier. This makes viral sites all the more easier to go viral.

Just some things to think about in case you’re a deer in headlights now that the FTC truck is speeding at you.

There’s some creative offers coming out that I have seen lately. One that I saw that looked promising was an SEO course which also is a rebill. Perhaps legit membership sites can still put out affiliate rebills on the networks? Anyway, people are always going to want to know how to do SEO and get free traffic. I can’t see that going away… just never saw it in an aff network…

PS. get much riding in this winter? Unfortunately I coded all damn winter…

If only everybody who ran ebill offers would also die. . .

  3. March 3, 2010

Seems all the fads are dying now. I wonder what the next will be?

  4. March 3, 2010

Two things… the first is considering CPS. Assuming you have some real salesman skills, CPS can still be pulled off.

But if you ask me, online marketing needs to open up a few new avenues besides the classics. Mobile, education, auto insurance, etc. We need a more diverse lead gen industry which is something some affiliate marketing conventions should consider.

We’ve already got mobile, auto insurance, mortgage, debt, etc. But damn we need something else.

Affiliate Marketing is dead. Everybody go back to their day jobs.

It seems to me that a lot of affiliate marketers are experiencing a slow down or aren’t able to support themselves full time like they did before. What are your thoughts on this?”

  7. March 4, 2010

Same, I haven’t gone out once this winter on my Raptor.

  8. March 5, 2010

Unfortunately Rebills are at the end of the road now, so there is not much milk left in that cow. The entire thing is shaking. I dont know what to promote now, if rebills are dead, then what works? Taking my rebill profits and putting it into a business idea seems the right thing to do now .

No worries, this industry is just in its infancy, there’s millions of new opportunities to come… we’ve yet to tap so many markets… auto sales, real estate, legal… we’re not even scratching the surface

This industry is not in its infancy.. go take a look at the age of commission junction. It is beginning to lash back. There are far too many people competing, too many idiots doing shady stuff that causes regulations to be passed. I am not going to be the grim reaper and say that the business is dead – but it is certainly going to consolidate. Remember when the wild west was wild and everyone made money on oil – or in the mid west farming? What happened? The little guy got pushed out. In my opinion it is getting to the point where the barrier for entry for a company like eHarmony to do their own SEM, Social or Email is very small. All those industries you mentioned if you added mortgage and home equity line of credit you would have all of the old offers we used to have a few years ago before the United States economy decided to fall apart.

  11. March 5, 2010

Not only it’s hard today to find a niche to work in but It’s very hard nowadays to find a decent company and work for it as an affiliate…
And speaking about those services that you mentioned – Digg, Reddit, Twitter and so on – they’re drowning in spam/ads. They can disappear because of that.

Someone needs to make a site where you can order dog food on the internet.

  13. March 5, 2010

The industry isn’t dying… There’s plenty of ways to make money with it, and plenty of legit offers out there that sell well you just have to adapt to a new environment if you want to survive. And if you’re new to the game, you have an opportunity to make some money too since everyone is scrambling to find the next big thing.

  14. March 6, 2010

Sure hope that’s not the case. Everything goes into a lull now and then.

    Till then,

Today’s goose that lays the golden egg is tomorrows old news that get bandied around as the ultimate online money making secret, in a free ebook, to boot. That much will remain the same for every cycle of internet marketing fads…..

Jesus Christ, rebills aren’t going anywhere, people in this game are just to young and green to know any better.

Most discussing this don’t even know that just a few companies owned virtually all the shady rebills. They all had dozens of offers, dozens of white labels for networks so it could look like an exclusive. So of course when they went down it looked like 90% of the industry went in one day.

Rebills, risk free trial, not going anywhere, plenty of offers will do it legit, treat their customers right, and not be pimping 70 cent bottles of pills for $89.

Half the affiliates that were running the majority of that traffic have only been in the industry for 12-24 months, 16 year old kids could do 100k a month driving traffic to flogs, it takes no skill to push a free trial and that’s a good thing.

Merchant processing is already starting to level off for most of us who do it right, it will continue to do so over the next few months and the guys left standing will be doing this model right.

You’re going to see new pricing models, hybrid CPA’s and some other developments to make it work, $60 CPA’s won’t cut it with a legit company who’s got a high cost of goods and only rebilling a fair $30–$40 a month, but these offers aren’t going anywhere, just the few guys who did the smash and grab and refuse to go straight.

  22. March 31, 2010

Nothing is dying, it’s just a phase where all the noobs and weak ones are weeded out which leaves a lot more money lying on the table for the rest of us

  23. April 1, 2010

trillion new opportunities for profitability not involving commodity items @ a big-box store – only problem is all the smart marketers are bottlenecked on the promotion end & going after the same offers.

  24. April 2, 2010

Well said, Net. That’s pretty much the cycle of life as far as internet marketing goes.

    Till then,

    Jean

These comments are so funny. I’m fairly confident that he was joking, but someone said that affiliate marketing is dead.

I think that it is good that rebills are almost gone because a lot of the people that market them do it in a shady way. This hurts the entire market as we have seen and hopefully these people do go back to their day jobs.

Let’s face it people, this is just another wave in the world of IM and if you can’t stand the heat – get out of the kitchen!

  26. April 3, 2010

Tough but true, Jason. Good way to put it.

    Till then,

some great tips here man – thanks for the heads up :-)

  28. April 6, 2010

That will be the subject of the make money online ebooks web marketeers will be selling next season ;-)

Once everybody starts piling in and writing and talking about the newest best thing in internet marketing we generally see the boom and then the bust of said method as an effective means of making money online.

I agree that there will be just an evolution of new pricing models but CPA is going to be strong. I am part of a network which is working with a product company that is willing to put some classic new models in place. Free trial with return policies but no rebills. CPS quantity based discounts. The networks will not be able to charge $40 anymore for Acai but will be able to charge $20-$30 for a CPS acai campaign.

    Let me know your thoughts?

  30. April 11, 2010

Where theres a will… there’s a way. I am sure alot of people will be able to adapt if they haven’t already, but again…. I am sure most people will be able to bounce back from the set back.

  31. April 14, 2010

I got to disagree, Affiliate marketing is one of the best ways to make money online!

  35. May 4, 2010

Interesting thoughts. I do think the rebills were quite few peoples bread and butter. But you will always have to find new ways to turn a buck. It can’t be easy all the time otherwise more people would be doing it.
