Being an Advertiser

Is hard as hell.

My hope is that when I emerge from this muck, profitable or not I’ll be able to share the obstacles I went through. Right now it’s been cramming 1 Excel spreadsheet for hours trying to make the numbers work. There is a lot to it people.

So if you’re an affiliate chilling on $1-10k+/day and you’re happy…stay happy for a while and consider what you’ll be getting yourself into. It’s not “Affiliates are making $40 they’re the middle man, step it up to be an advertiser and everything will be the same, only you’ll make $80/month instead of $40!”

Any guru that says, preaches, or teaches that -including myself because I’m sure I’ve said it before in the past- is a…ermm…gutard? This wasn’t really meant to be a post, just an update that wouldn’t appropriately fit on Twitter. It may take a while, but hopefully I’ll have an article series about all this soon.

Goober affiliate the goober gutard.

At the very least, we may profit from your mistakes, muhahaha!

But seriously it would definitely be interesting to hear the trials and tribulations of going into that side of the game.

Becoming a merchant was amongst the hardest things I have ever done. So many more variables, so many more risks, so much more time commitment, the extra money may not be worth the gray hair.

I really can’t wait to hear about what all aspects of creating your own offer your having trouble with and what it is like to actually create an offer and what your expected product life cycle.

Also, are you going to make an Ubercamp for new advertisers? lol

Yes I agree it is hard as hell. But if you stick to the basics with great courage, you are inline with the required path. Which means you are more towards the success. Success comes with difficulty Role of an Advertiser is such a great example.

I agree being an advertiser is hard. But I’m sure it’ll be okay in the long run.

This is quite a follow up to your previous post talking about hiring people. Nice to know that change in your mindset. This will put most of your upcoming posts in perspective. Good thing this one wasn’t twittexclusive.

Well looking forward to the follow up article on this then =D And yes I agree that it is tough be to be an advertiser, but it is also tough from the publishers side too. Each have their own pros and cons ;-)

nice experiment, do inform us about ur experience.

I have to agree with Brad about outsourcing.

I have all kinds of cred when it comes to shuffling Excel spreadsheets for clients, but I don’t touch my own numbers because I want to look at the results objectively and that just isn’t possible when I’ve been beating the analytics into the ground through an entire Holiday weekend.

Stick to what your doing and you should see great results. Wish you luck.

Nice journey of advertising, look some more cause i’m still newbie :)

  18. October 3, 2009

We are on both sides of the equation as well. Being the advertiser is by far more of a headache then the affiliate marketing side. Good luck.

I agree with Jonathan, hard work pays off sooner or later. Always keep a track of what is working and what is not. There will be a time when you review all those and make some improvements.

I totally agree with making things as much automated as that can be. I mean the tedious routines that we come across here.

  23. November 3, 2009

Very nice…Keep up da good work !!

  24. November 16, 2009

I can definitely relate. In the early days of my business I got excited by early results. So I pumped a bunch of money into PPC advertising. Unfortunately I wasn’t monitoring things properly and ended up spending very close to how much I made. Since I was also getting traffic from organic rankings, overall the advertising was a bust.

Yeah, starting your blog you should begin advertisking with big affiliates. Yahoo or Google Ads. Post your stuff and promote your blog. After a time you should get more and more visitors. Having 2’000+ visitors daily you can start mailing to companys directly and offer a contact form on your site to wich interested publishers can appeal.
