First off, Happy Valentines Day. If you don’t have a Valentine just hit me up with an email and I’ll send you some UberSensual pictures of myself. Kidding.
Anyways, it appears that Zac Johnson recently made a post kind of in response to what I wrote about posting blog income. You can read his post here. I’m not sure if this is a response to me, because he didn’t mention me at all (or just didn’t want to link to me), but it was posted two days after I made my post.
Now I didn’t really make this post to ramble more and bore you to death, but more to ask you for your opinion. I’ll take a quote from his post :
So back to the topic… why do some blogs post monthly earnings? Not only can these types of posts help with exposure for a blog, but they also play a huge part in motivation and show that “bloggers” actually are making money. What better motivation is there, then seeing someone earn $30,000 a month from a blog?
This still kind of neglects the points that I made. We all know that seeing screenshots of gurus making money is great motivation for people, but where is there more money to be made: blogging or affiliate marketing? Um the answer is affiliate marketing.
Now here’s my question to you guys, if you’re reading an affiliate marketing blog, which screenshot would you rather see?

or

Now if I was an affiliate, I’d surely be motivated by seeing the bigger numbers and more potential in the industry that I want to get involved in. Most affiliate marketers won’t become bloggers, so who cares how much blogging income makes? Bloggers may care, other people may care (although I think would still like a bigger income report anyways), but will affiliate marketers care? I’m not saying blog income reports are a bad thing, but income in the form of the industry you’re the “guru” in is much more appealing.
So give me your thoughts. Would you rather see blog income reports, or affiliate marketing/adsense income reports?

I’d rather say fuck everyone else’s screenshots and make my own money
February 14th, 2008 at 9:43 pm
Brian,
I second that. Amen.
This blog has very good stuff. But who needs post like this? Just an opinion.
February 14th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
Hey Paul.
Nice post And Happy Valentine’s Day to you too. Now I’m sure you’d make a sexy date, but I’ve already got one of my own.
Anyways, onto your post, I noticed you said this, “You can read his post here.” I’m not sure if that link was supposed to point to somewhere else, or if it was supposed to be a parody of the many bloggers that do that, haha.
As far as your question, I would much rather see affiliate data / screenshots. It is almost commonsense, and I don’t even know who would want to know abut making money on a blog. I mean, the $3,042.64 is only an EXTREMELY small fraction of the $895,560 so I would much rather know what program you are using to make that affiliate income and through which methods.
By the way, which affiliate is that a screenshot from? It kind of looks like AzoogleAds, but I’m not quite sure.
February 14th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
Yup, it’s Az
February 14th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
Happy Valentines Day Paul.
I don’t care about the chump change. What I want to know is how do I get a screenshot like that from one of my own affiliate reports page!
February 14th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Learn photoshop.
February 14th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
Hey —
almost a million clicks!! Holy Cow!!
Can you PLEASE explain how you scale to that degree???
Please please please!! :0
I’m UberBegging! :)
February 14th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
100% correct. Why the hell do I care if you are making money with your blog?
Isn’t this about making money via affiliate marketing not becoming a profiting blogger?
I’d venture to say the majority of the people out there tearing it up in the AM industry don’t even have blogs and stay under the radar (see todays shoemoney post).
If I wanted to be reading how to make money (supposedly) off a blog I would be reading John Chow or better yet, ProBlogger.
Stick to the actual AM earnings reports.

are you emailing now or is that straight ppc?
February 14th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
On the margin, affiliate reports are better. However, I don’t see any reason we can’t have both.
February 14th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
I would rather see choice B.
Also, interesting correlation between your top six campaigns.
1 click = $1 of revenue
February 14th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
There is one towards the bottom of the offers with 4800 clicks and $31… ouch! Even at $0.01/click you lost money. I am sure that does not happen often does it?
February 14th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
Actually that second screenshot is pretty useless without some more detail. How long a period is this for? How much did you spend in PPC to get to 859K? If you spent 900K to get 859L, you get an impressive screen shot but your losing money, so who cares. What kinds of affiliate programs were used to generate this? What sites were used to make this revenue?
The first screen shot is useful for a lot of reasons. 1) You know what site was used to make the revenue (the blog it was posted on). 2) You know what expenses where involved. 3) You know which programs were used to generate the revenue (you can see them on the blog).
Without more information, the second screens shot isn’t really useful to anyone except for inflating the ego of the person who posted it.
February 14th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
Both, screw choosing.
However, blog income reports are virtually useless to me… an affiliate marketer and worthless blogger.
In the spirit of sharing it would also be nice to know the time frames associated with the reports. The azoogle offer
report, is that just february? 2008? or lifetime?

They dont post affiliate earnings because they’re not that impressive whereas their blog incomes are.
You only post income when its impressive, otherwise people just laugh.
Any affiliate blogger should post theyre affiliate incomes to prove they are a real super affiliate but its not essential.
To be honest, scrap the screenshots, skip straight to the info.
February 14th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
Just one suggestion… you shouldn’t black out the offers in your screenshot. :)
February 14th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
If it’s a blog about affiliating, then affiliate reports. If it’s a blog about blogging…. affiliate reports :)
February 14th, 2008 at 5:48 pm
I lost respect for Zac Johnson’s blog when he started basically self-spamming it with his “offers of the day” chock full of affiliate links so he can build his downlines.
But seriously fuck blogs - get out there and make the dough.
February 14th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
Neither.
What I read both yours and Zac’s blogs for is to find tips to get where you are. So the more bloggers post about how much money they make, the less they actually post about how they are doing it. And, the less interested I am in reading their blog.
Everyone already knows you and Zac bank. We don’t need another screen shot. We need orginal ideas and good tips.
February 14th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
Also, those are just his blog stats. Put your’s up against it in an update post so we can compare apples to apples…
February 14th, 2008 at 6:51 pm
Yes it least show how much you spent, I mean for all we know you could of spend $800,000 and made $859,000. Which to me is pretty average for a year or few years time frame.
February 14th, 2008 at 9:26 pm
Do you guys really believe that someone who almost do 800k/month and just break even. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter if their ROI is low, because they have so much volume.
February 14th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
why wouldn’t he blackout the offers? his blog gives you useful advice, his goal isn’t to hand you a check for nothing. Do your part, use your brain.
February 14th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
incredible Paul - congrats!! I vote B. I love seeing your screenshots. Keep up the good work.
February 14th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
impressive revenue,
but I hope the $$ per click is low as you have almost as many clicks as dollars in revenue. If your paying a dollar a click you only make 15k profit which is like a 1.7% profit margin. obviously depends on the time scale.
February 14th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
Now that is my kind of motivation. I hope you had a outstanding ROI.well for those ubersensual pictures…neah you’re just not my type.:) I wish you the best, Paul.
February 14th, 2008 at 8:05 pm
I’d rather see a screen shot from those videos you make with your mexican midget boyfriend, to be honest with ya.
February 14th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Don’t worry, my margins are decent and I didn’t spend anywhere NEAR 800k to make that revenue.
February 14th, 2008 at 8:26 pm
Wow that’s a nice affiliate income Paul….
It says “As of February 14, 2008″, and I assume that’s the end date, and what’s the start date?
February 14th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
I think I checked the start date as November or October, one of those two.
February 14th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
yeah i never saw the point in posting blog stats. motivation? pfff. more like showing off. nobody gives a shit!
February 14th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
My vote would be for more information, more screen shots, a description of the time frame and ad/ppc costs associated with the time frame.
Frankly, seeing your actual checks is a *BIG* motivator for me because it makes it seem more “realistic”. (It’s easier for me to visualize MY name on checks that size!)
But, reading your “tips” and having the benefits of your wisdom and guidance are priceless.
February 14th, 2008 at 10:18 pm
Where are you getting that many clicks? How much do you spend per click? Come on…throw us a bone. :-) Love your posts….I read them daily…Thank you for the hope you are giving this newbie! Keep up the GREAT work!
God Bless!
February 15th, 2008 at 12:04 am
I like your blog income posts but would rather prefer your affiliate income posts.
Aloha from Hawaii.
February 15th, 2008 at 12:34 am
That’s one crazy screenshot. :)
Yeah, if it’s a blog about Affiliate Marketing, I’d rather see income reports from AM. I think that most who do the ‘Blog Income Report’ thing are trying to emulate John Chow, and his blog is about nothing much, so I can see why he posts them.
It would also be good to post a vague % profit though, let us know what we should be aiming for. Your CC statement showed ~$300k, so I’m guessing you do 50-60% profit? Also is that all PPC, any significant organic or email in there?
So I’m saying I like seeing this stuff, but don’t just post the screenshot for your ego, give us whatever background you can that wouldn’t hurt you from a competitive viewpoint.

If his cc statement shows ~300k, and his earnings are ~850k it would more in the direction of 280% ROI =)

How does a 19 year-old kid get a 300K credit card limit? Scan a bank statment with your balance and I’ll be more impressed.

AMEX
February 15th, 2008 at 7:42 am
Hi Paul,
Both income statements have their own effect on motivation, IMHO blog income gets people thinking that money can be made online and through blog and the incomes are not over the top.
Affiliate income statements is more geared towards people in AM arena.
As an affiliate I am more interested in AF Statements and strategies, pratcies etc.
Well Zac is fully utilizing his blog not even a single link in his posts without refereal link and most of them where he can get residual income.

I think people like to see what others bloggers and affiliate marketers are making. When the number isn’t huge, it is a more realistic for another blogger to earn that amount.
At the same time, I know affiliate marketers like to see the larger numbers because it shows them that it can be done.
The larger numbers are inspiring to others.
February 15th, 2008 at 9:59 am
Hey man, great topic of discussion but I think the answer varies. On my blog, I just talk about making money online. So, I post pictures of my affiliate earnings and a monthly earnings report encapsulating everything.
Some blogs, like John Chow, are about making money through his blog and while he makes some money with affiliate sales a majority is through what he does on the blog.
So while the two reports are different and appeal to different types of people, you have to put them in to context in order to really see what the point is. If John Chow put up a screenshot saying he made $100 with Azoogle, it wouldn’t benefit his audience. If you were to make a post saying you made $300 in paid reviews, it would have the same effect. Know what I mean?

February 15th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
Very nice earnings there! Especially the 2nd picture. Which kinda answers your question. To be frank, i would happily enjoy all your screenshots but i think that the majority of people who visit this blog would rather see affiliate earnings and big numbers.
February 15th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
I prefer the blog income report style, because it is more like a financial report. Revenue and expenses and it gives you the whole picture.
Screenshots are somewhat interesting…the problem is that they mean absolutely nothing if you don’t know the expenses. They can be photoshopped, faked, or whatever else too, so they are no different than writing something out by hand.
People come to these sites looking for the whole “get rich” plan laid right out step by step. This site has some useful info, but it never gives away the details. And why should he, more people might steal a piece of his pie…if he is actually getting a piece as big as he makes it appear.
