Affiliate Marketing On Twitter

(39) Comments... Have Your Say! ~ May 8th, 2008

Ok so anybody that doesn’t care about ethics or spamming, make something that creates Twitter accounts, follows like a million people (a lot just follow you back for the hell of it), and then spams the crap out of them with affiliate offers. Or just make a bot that sends a crap load of direct messages to people saying “Hey I see you have a house, I got a really cheap mortgage refinance here.” I’m not advocating you do this, just sayin’.

Twitter on Quantcast

I took a quick look over at Quantcast on Twitter to see what the demographics looked like.

The site caters to a more educated audience. The typical visitor subscribes to New Yorker and reads realclearpolitics.com.

Ok so we have more educated people on Twitter, and it looks like the audience is a little older than the 13 year old Myspace crowd. So this kind of makes ringtones or something like that not the best choice.

So what do older people want? I don’t know, the really old chaps like wine, cigars, etc. Mid range people maybe want Starbucks coupons, New York Times subscriptions, maybe a better mortgage. All of these things have affiliate offers. It looks like 30% of the users have a child in their household…maybe you coupon guys can find a Toys ‘R Us coupon for them, haha.

Do I have any idea that this will work? No…it just came to mind as I was on Twitter earlier. I’m in the whole webmaster crowd on Twitter, but I’m sure there’s normal people out there that don’t know what affiliate marketing is. It’s just a potentially large traffic source that looks untapped; perhaps people are doing it already and I just haven’t gotten any spam.

Good luck and don’t blame me for any of this.

DISCLAIMER : These are my ideas only, and I am not recommending you take action on anything I say. If you piss Twitter off and they sue you or something crazy, don’t point the finger at me. I’m only thinking out loud here, if it sparks any ideas in your mind then so be it.

I think it would be hard to convert twitter traffic but if you send them to a made for adsense website, or parked page I bet you would make some decent revenue.

And that decent revenue would certainly attract a ban soon from Twitter.

Twitter audience would revolt in droves. I hope internet marketers don’t ruin the damn thing. News today is that Twitter is blacklisting spammers.

i think most people on Twitter are above-average in terms of smart internet users, and unless you provide info that is really valuable to them, they’re not going to purchase anything from your site. I think they’d be even less likely to click on ads on a made-for-adsense page.

Actually, Twitter just announced that they are banning users who are spamming. They’re basing the ban on the ratio of followers to following, or the other way around.

I actually read an article about 2 hours ago on this exact topic. Jim Kukral had a problem with receiving hundreds of messages everyday so he ended up quitting Twitter.

Uhh, I believe you’re missing my point (s). I am simply challenging Paul to post higher quality content, thats all. Clearly you’re unable to comprehend my intentions and can only make fun of the the things you have gathered from a photo of me, which unlike you, I am not embarrassed to show and attach to my name. Next time you decide to waste my time with you’re pointless comments at least say something worth reading instead of speaking through strictly emotion and no thought.

Do you hate for the purpose of hating? He made a possible mistake posting this, but still, doesn’t mean you need to jump onto evey post and say he’s wrong. Pick your battles wisely.

The simple fact that you are suggesting that this post was a possible mistake only reiterates my point. Again, I am not “hating” on Paul, simply challenging him to post higher quality content. I appreciate his posts and the time he takes to write them, I really do, but wouldn’t his readers benefit more from tactics that wouldn’t jeopardize getting banned and spamming other people? I will praise good posts and disagree with bad ones, doesn’t mean I have anything against Paul.

Jonathan Volk had also a great “marketing idea”… stick to the legit “spamming” and leave BS ideas behind.

You are assuming most of the people who read the post would actually start spamming people around through twitter, is it? In my opinion, people shall keep twitter clean, at least I am doing it.

Twitter is filled with sheeple that follow all the webmasters that tell them to join. Sheeple buy stuff. Sell um an ebook or piece of software that’s going to make them rich. It’s just that simple. The webmaster crowd buys all this junk :)

this is a terrible idea, not because it won’t make you money, but because it is a prime example of when affiliate takes a good service and trash it up with all the spammy offers (like craigslist).

If you can’t find ways to make money without spamming people than you should not be an affiliate marketer. there are pleny of legit ways to make money, no need to ruin good serivces like twitter.

if all of ur 3500 subscribers started doing this tomorrow and posted 3-4 offers a day, that’s 14,000 spam posts a day, just from ur readers alone. that would effectively turn off tons of twitter users and in term ruin the profibility of this scheme all together,

So in the end you will turn off twitter users, people won’t have anyone else to spam on twitter, and u ruined a cool service.

bad post here paul. leave the shady techniques to nickycakes, i would prefer to learn legit stuff here,,,,

Paul, u can post something like this and then just say “i’m not advocating this” b/c the fact that you posted it means you advocate it.

There’s nothing wrong with spamming. The pussies who are against this because of spamming and not because it’s lots of work for little profit are fascist and socialist freaks. You need to understand that even email spamming is justified if you can get away with it and you make good bank. Anything that ain’t illegal worldwide or against the laws of nature is fair game.

what does spamming have to do with fascism or socialism? I can think of plenty of things that are not illegal world wide that should not be done.

You’re ethic void is as great as your incompetence…

I somehow found it irrelevant, spamming is spamming after all; does not matter whether it’s legal or illegal. Unfortunately not all laws in all countries ban everything that is illegal but eventually they would.
